More About Our Latest Project

Building Suni Weir on the Pompue River

The proposed raising of the Suni Weir’s concrete wall by approximately 4 feet represents a highly cost-effective and practical intervention with significant ecological and community benefits. With an estimated budget of $2,500, the project demonstrates that meaningful conservation outcomes can be achieved with relatively modest financial investment. Furthermore, the short implementation timeline of roughly two weeks ensures minimal disruption while delivering rapid, tangible results.

This increase in height will substantially improve the weir’s capacity to retain water, thereby strengthening its role as a reliable, year-round water source for wildlife in Coutada 9. During dry periods, even a small rise in water level can make a critical difference, supporting larger numbers of animals and reducing stress on the ecosystem.

From a habitat perspective, the enhanced water retention will further stabilize and enrich the riparian zone along the Pompue River. Improved moisture availability will encourage denser vegetation growth, enhancing bank stability, reducing erosion, and supporting greater biodiversity.

In addition, the project’s affordability and short construction period make it well-suited for local implementation. It provides immediate employment opportunities for community members, while also building local capacity and reinforcing the link between conservation efforts and economic benefit.

Overall, this modest upgrade offers a high return on investment, delivering lasting environmental improvements alongside meaningful social and economic gains.
